Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Gaslamp Quarter was the natural choice for development in San Diego in the mid-1850s. Men from San Francisco saw the waterfront area as the perfect place to establish a city, and the area, known as New Town as opposed to the area of Old Town San Diego, grew rapidly, becoming a neighborhood of gambling halls and bordellos called Stingaree. Famous lawman Wyatt Earp even put down stakes in the San Diego district. In the late 1970s, the city and historic preservationists decided to revitalize the area, and it became what it is today - the Gaslamp Quarter.
